NICU Photography

Tips for documenting the Magic and hope of babies and families in the NICU

Hello all you lovely people and welcome back to the blog!

Back at the end of 2018, I was trying to schedule a maternity photo shoot for my best friend. Now she was going through some complications with her pregnancy, and there was concern that she may have to do a c-section early, which would result in the little baby having to spend some time in the NICU.

Well during that time I started looking into NICU photography and it's honestly so darling. These little tiny itty-bitty humans, hooked up to these giant machines and these amazing photographers are able to create these breathtaking images. It just makes your heart break and fills you with joy cuz you know that these little things are struggling, and they're hanging on. I had been looking up some tips and tricks and going through what I may want to do if we were going to have to take some NICU photos.

I've actually found a couple of great articles on this topic.

This article "Tiny love: 10 tips for photographing preemies in the NICU" is by Krista Gantt at clickinmoms.com and she is actually a nurse in North Carolina and she talks about some tips and tricks to do NICU photography. These tips are different, as they are aren't tips on posing or aperture or focus, but on mindfulness of other families, respecting the nurses, and what equipment should or shouldn't be used in the NICU.

Jessica at polkadotpoplars.com has a more DIY method in her "10 photographs to take if your baby is in the NICU". Her black and white photos alone are stunning, and her ideas of photographing the entrance doors that you inevitably walk through a thousand times, or the clock that you live by for feeding and care are great ideas.

These articles have a ton of great tips for photographers, but they're also great for parents, or their friends that may be able to provide this service to them. Heaven forbid we should need these tips, but they are great to keep in mind in the event a family member or friend ends up spending time with their baby in the NICU. Check out these articles even for the pictures alone, as they are super darling!

Thankfully this was a topic that I didn't have to become too familiar with, as my friend was able go almost to full term before her little Baby Bennett arrived! So yes, if you're ever wondering why there might be radio silence on the blog or Instagram lately, it's because I'm busy snuggling the cutest little ginger you ever did see, lol.

As always, until next time,

Emily-Rose
